The Roberts International Airport (RIA), Liberia’s flagship gateway to the world, is at the center of an unfolding corruption scandal. Leaked financial documents and insider reports reveal gross financial misconduct implicating key members of the airport’s board, particularly the board chairman, Massaquoi Kamara.
Allegations of Misuse of Funds
According to a credible source, Massaquoi Kamara has reportedly diverted funds from the airport’s operational accounts for personal use, including lavish renovations of an office he now uses as his personal workspace. This is seen as a breach of protocol, as board members are intended to focus on policymaking, not day-to-day management.
Leaked bank transaction messages shared with our news desk provide further damning evidence. On July 24, 2024, a sum of $2,250 was withdrawn under the authorization of “Massaquoi” from the airport’s account. Another suspicious withdrawal of $1,800 by “Tibelrosa S. Tarponweh” occurred on the same day, raising questions about the chain of command and accountability within the board. These withdrawals are in addition to an earlier transaction on June 21, 2024, where $1,800 was withdrawn by the same Tibelrosa S. Tarponweh.

The “Working Board” Controversy
The RIA board has allegedly transformed from a policy-oriented body to a “working board,” a move that insiders suggest is illegal. Traditionally, board members receive quarterly stipends for their oversight roles, but this scandal reveals that members now receive monthly payments of $2,000 each, post-tax deductions. In addition, they reportedly enjoy a slew of benefits, including fuel allowances and scratch cards.
This arrangement contravenes the mandate of such governance boards and suggests a deliberate attempt to inflate their financial benefits at the expense of the airport’s resources.
Public Outrage and Call for Accountability
The revelations have sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for immediate investigations by anti-corruption bodies and audits of the RIA’s financial records. Citizens and advocacy groups argue that funds meant for the airport’s development are being siphoned off by individuals entrusted to safeguard its operations.
The Way Forward
As Liberia seeks to rebuild its international reputation, scandals like this jeopardize efforts to attract investors and improve infrastructure. Transparency and accountability must take center stage, and authorities must ensure that public trust is restored. Investigations are expected to intensify in the coming days, with potential legal consequences for those found culpable.
