The National Security Agency (NSA) of Liberia has taken decisive action against its Assistant Director for Operations, Nelsco A. Wolo, citing allegations of misconduct and breach of agency regulations. In a formal letter dated January 20, 2025, the NSA requested the immediate return of all government-issued property in Wolo’s possession, including a vehicle, identification badge, communication equipment, and a weapon.
The controversy stems from Wolo’s recent participation in the funeral of the late Senator Prince Y. Johnson, where he delivered a tribute on behalf of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR). The agency has stated that this act violated its rules and regulations, as it was carried out without prior approval or consultation with the NSA leadership.
In the letter signed by Hon. Patrick P. Doe, Deputy Director for Administration, Wolo was also directed to submit a written explanation for his actions to the Office of the Director. “This action directly contravenes the Rules and Regulations of the Agency, where you serve as Assistant Director for Operations,” the letter emphasized, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
The NSA’s demand for “prompt compliance” has raised eyebrows in political and security circles, with some questioning whether Wolo’s actions were a genuine lapse in judgment or part of a broader political agenda. Critics have pointed out that the late Senator Johnson was a polarizing figure in Liberian politics, and any association with his legacy is bound to attract scrutiny.
Efforts to reach Wolo for comment have so far been unsuccessful, and the NSA has not disclosed what disciplinary measures might follow if he fails to comply. As this situation unfolds, it is likely to reignite debates about the politicization of Liberia’s security agencies and the fine line between personal and professional conduct for public officials.
