The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), with funding from the World Bank’s Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project (LSMFP), has begun distributing 400 Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders to local fishermen at Popo Beach in New Kru Town, Montserrado County. This initiative aims to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainable fisheries practices for artisanal fishers.

The distribution targets licensed fisherfolk in Montserrado, Grand Bassa, and Grand Cape Mount counties. In a joint press statement, NaFAA and LSMFP highlighted the key benefits of the AIS transponders, including real-time vessel tracking, improved emergency response capabilities, and the prevention of vessel losses. By accurately monitoring fishing routes, the transponders are expected to enhance operational efficiency.

Furthermore, the introduction of AIS technology marks a significant step forward in sustainable fisheries management. The devices provide crucial data on fishing locations and patterns, helping to prevent overfishing and maintain healthy fish stocks.

The AIS transponders feature multiple power options, including rechargeable batteries, wired connections, and solar energy compatibility, ensuring adaptability to challenging environmental conditions. They operate in both normal and emergency modes, offering increased reliability for routine operations and critical situations.

NaFAA also confirmed that the LSMFP will provide extensive technical support and training for the fishermen.
