Criminal Court A’ Residence Judge Roosevelt Willie Sits Left to LNBA and WABA’s President Cllr Bornor M. Varmah
Monrovia, Liberia –The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has strongly condemned a violent attack on the home of Criminal Court “A” Resident Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie, describing it as a direct threat to judicial independence and rule of law in Liberia.
In a statement released Thursday, LNBA President Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah revealed that on the evening of Wednesday, June 25, a group of unidentified individuals, armed with machetes and sticks and riding motorcycles, attempted to forcefully enter Judge Willie’s residence. The attackers were repelled only by the swift intervention of armed police officers.
According to the LNBA, this marks the third such reported attack on Judge Willie’s home. The Association also expressed alarm over reports from other judges who have received similar threats and experienced attempted break-ins, including anonymous text messages aimed at intimidating them.
The Bar labeled these acts as “gangsterism” and declared that such behavior has no place in a civilized and democratic society. “These attacks represent a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary and undermine public confidence in the rule of law,” the statement said.
Calling for immediate action, the LNBA urged the Ministry of Justice and other relevant state security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are brought to justice. The Association also called on the Liberia National Police to provide permanent security at the residence of Judge Willie and all judges facing similar threats.
The Bar reminded the Government of Liberia of its constitutional and moral obligation to guarantee the safety of judicial officers, particularly those handling high-risk cases. “Judge Willie must be afforded enhanced protection without delay,” the statement emphasized.
In a concluding note, the LNBA extended heartfelt birthday wishes to Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh on her 70th birthday, lauding her decades of service, integrity, and excellence in the judiciary.
The LNBA reaffirmed its commitment to defending judicial independence and ensuring the protection of all judicial officers across the country.
