The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has awarded a prestigious scholarship to a Liberian student to pursue a master’s degree in advanced maritime studies at Dalian University in China, in a major boost to Liberia’s maritime human resource development.

The scholarship recipient, who emerged through an independent and competitive vetting process, is scheduled to depart Liberia on August 30, 2026, to begin his advanced studies.

The award was made possible through the Government of the People’s Republic of China, which provided the scholarship to Liberia as part of its growing cooperation in maritime education and capacity building.

Dalian University is globally recognized as one of the top institutions for maritime education, research and professional training, offering specialized programs designed to prepare professionals for the demands of the evolving global maritime industry.

Speaking on the development, LiMA Commissioner/CEO Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr. said the scholarship is a critical investment in Liberia’s future, stressing that the competitiveness of the sector rests on the quality of its people.

“This scholarship represents an important opportunity for quality maritime training. We must continue to invest in our people because the strength and competitiveness of Liberia’s maritime sector depend greatly on the knowledge, skills and professionalism of our human resources,” Lighe said.

Lighe added that LiMA remains committed not only to strengthening regulatory and operational systems, but also to ensuring Liberians are equipped with advanced expertise to compete effectively in the international maritime arena.
