MONROVIA, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.has addressed the nation, assuring Liberians that government is firmly in control of the growing tension along the Liberia–Guinea border, particularly in the Sorlumba area of Foya District, Lofa County.

In a nationwide message delivered from the Executive Mansion, the President emphasized that maintaining peace and national security remains his administration’s highest priority, even as concerns rise among citizens in border communities.

President Boakai disclosed that his government acted swiftly to prevent escalation by engaging Guinea through diplomatic channels. He noted that Liberia also worked alongside Mano River Union partners, including Sierra Leone, to promote dialogue and cooperation.

“We are responsibly managing the situation with calm and determination,” the President stated.

In a significant breakthrough, President Boakai revealed that the Government of Guinea has instructed its troops to return to their previous positions along the border — a move described as a major step toward de-escalation.

This development follows high-level engagements among regional leaders aimed at restoring stability and maintaining long-standing ties between the neighboring countries.

Despite the easing tension, Liberia’s security forces — including the Armed Forces of Liberia and the Liberia National Police — remain on alert, working with local communities to maintain order.

The President assured that all institutions are acting professionally and are committed to protecting citizens without provoking further conflict.

President Boakai praised regional and global partners, including the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union, for supporting Liberia’s peaceful approach.

He said their encouragement strengthens Liberia’s commitment to diplomacy over confrontation.

In a strong message to the nation, the President rejected any notion that Liberia’s diplomatic path reflects weakness.

“It is easy to fight and destroy. It is harder to rebuild,” he said, reminding citizens of Liberia’s painful past and the importance of preserving the peace achieved through years of sacrifice.

President Boakai called on Liberians, especially those in border areas, to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid spreading unverified information.

He stressed that misinformation could heighten fear and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Closing his address, the Liberian leader urged citizens to remain united and confident, reaffirming that Liberia will continue to stand for peace both at home and across the region.

“Let us remain calm, united, and committed to the values that define us,” he concluded.

The government says it will continue diplomatic engagements while closely monitoring the situation to ensure lasting peace along Liberia’s borders.
