Monrovia, Liberia — The Government of Liberia says it has stepped up diplomatic and consular engagement in Ghana following the death of 26-year-old Liberian national Austin Tengbeh, in what officials describe as a tragic incident now under criminal investigation in Accra.

In a statement issued over the weekend, the government confirmed that the Embassy of Liberia in Accra was alerted to the case on February 28 and immediately contacted Ghanaian authorities, including investigators within the Ghana Police Service, to obtain verified information and ensure due process.

Focus on Consular Protection and Justice

Liberian officials say their immediate concern is ensuring that the case proceeds transparently while also supporting the victim’s family.

Authorities confirmed that arrests have already been made in connection with the incident, with additional suspects still being pursued. The government said it remains actively engaged with Ghanaian investigators and will continue monitoring developments closely.

Tengbeh, who reportedly resided in the Spintex area of Accra, had visited a fellow Liberian in the Lashibi–Sakumono community when an altercation occurred. Police responded to the scene and transported him to Sakumono Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Liberian Embassy has since been in contact with members of the Liberian diaspora in Ghana and individuals linked to the incident, while also working to formally reach the deceased’s relatives to provide consular support.

Calls for Calm Among Diaspora Community

The Liberian government has urged citizens living in Ghana to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed, stressing its confidence in the judicial process and the longstanding diplomatic ties between Liberia and Ghana.

Officials described the death as a painful loss not only to the family but also to the wider Liberian community abroad, and extended condolences to those affected.

Unverified Accounts Circulating Online

Reports circulating on social media and among acquaintances of the deceased suggest the incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding that escalated into violence involving multiple individuals. Authorities, however, caution that only the ongoing police investigation will establish the full facts of the case.

For its part, the Liberian government says it remains committed to ensuring justice while safeguarding the welfare of its citizens overseas, noting that the case underscores the importance of strong diplomatic coordination in responding to emergencies involving nationals abroad.
