Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The African Union has expressed deep concern over the reported military strikes carried out by the United States in coordination with Israel against targets inside Iran, warning that the development signals a dangerous intensification of hostilities in the Middle East.
In a press statement issued from Addis Ababa, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, called for restraint, immediate de-escalation, and renewed diplomatic engagement among all parties involved.
The AU stressed that any response to the situation must align with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, emphasizing the importance of protecting global peace and security at a time of heightened geopolitical tension.
According to the Commission, continued escalation risks destabilizing global markets and worsening economic vulnerabilities, particularly in Africa, where rising energy costs, food insecurity, and fragile economies remain pressing concerns.
The AU further urged stakeholders to prioritize diplomatic solutions, including ongoing mediation initiatives facilitated by the Oman, noting that dialogue remains the most viable pathway to preventing further deterioration of the situation.
Chairperson Youssouf reiterated that lasting peace can only be achieved through diplomacy rather than military confrontation, underscoring the AU’s commitment to multilateral engagement and peaceful conflict resolution.
The statement forms part of the African Union’s broader diplomatic posture advocating restraint and negotiated settlements in international conflicts that carry implications for global stability and African development.
