Monrovia — The Government of Liberia has announced its decision to receive Mr. Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia from the United States on strictly humanitarian and temporary grounds, following a formal request from the U.S. Government.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT), the decision came after extensive consultations with national and international stakeholders, underscoring Liberia’s long-held commitment to human dignity, solidarity, and compassion during times of crisis.
The Liberian Government emphasized that this move aligns with the nation’s historical legacy of offering refuge and protection to people in need. As one of Africa’s oldest republics, Liberia has often extended goodwill to vulnerable groups, including African freedom fighters and democracy advocates who once found safety on Liberian soil.
“This decision reaffirms Liberia’s role as a responsible member of the international community and a nation that upholds humanitarian cooperation, rule of law, and mutual respect,” the release stated.
Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Liberia will collaborate closely with the U.S. Department of State to ensure that all assurances and procedures are observed in compliance with both national and international law.
The Government highlighted several safeguards guiding the process, including comprehensive security screening and vetting, respect for due process and human rights, and a non-refoulement assurance to prevent Mr. Abrego Garcia from being returned to any country where he might face persecution or harm.
Additionally, Liberia pledged to coordinate with the United Nations and other international partners to explore durable and lawful solutions under international law, including potential resettlement.
The Government welcomed the U.S. acknowledgment of this act of goodwill, stressing that the decision was made voluntarily and solely on humanitarian grounds.
Minister of Information Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, who signed the release, said the move reflects the longstanding friendship between Liberia and the United States, founded on shared values of humanity, freedom, and justice.
He reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to strengthening global partnerships that promote peace, lawful protection, and humanitarian cooperation.
