Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has officially accepted the resignation of Mr. Amin Modad, the former Minister of Commerce and Industry, following a controversial procurement decision that raised eyebrows within the government and the public.
Mr. Modad’s resignation comes in the wake of concerns regarding the purchase of a vehicle that significantly surpassed the government’s estimated cost for ministerial transportation. In a statement released from the Executive Mansion, President Boakai acknowledged Mr. Modad’s contributions to the Ministry but criticized the decision to proceed with such an expenditure during a challenging economic period.
“This purchase reflects poor judgment and a lack of sensitivity to the current economic environment,” the President stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in public service.
In response to the situation, the President has directed that the vehicle be transferred to the General Services Agency (GSA) for proper use in accommodating VIP guests of the government, ensuring that the asset will still serve a purpose for the state.
To fill the leadership gap temporarily, President Boakai has appointed Deputy Minister for Administration Madam Scholastica Tanneh Nyenkan-Nimely to act in the Minister’s role until a permanent replacement is found.
The Government of Liberia continues to emphasize its dedication to prudent resource management and ethical governance as it navigates these challenges.
