Monrovia, Liberia – Nobel Peace Prize laureate Leymah Gbowee has announced her support for Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
In a statement posted on her official Facebook page, Gbowee expressed her honor in backing the initiative, highlighting the UN’s critical role in ending Liberia’s civil conflict in 2003. She stated,
“A non-permanent seat will allow Liberia to continue to contribute to the legacy of peace and conflict resolution that our nation has worked tirelessly to cultivate.”
The Liberian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had formally invited Gbowee and others prominent Liberians to support this initiative, acknowledging her influential role in the nation’s peace process. In a letter dated September 6, the ministry emphasized Gbowee’s advocacy for women and peace globally, underscoring her significance as a prominent national figure.
Liberia’s bid will be officially launched at the UN Headquarters during the upcoming UN General Assembly on September 27, 2024. The government is mobilizing support from esteemed figures, including former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Manneh Weah, to enhance their campaign.
The letter noted Liberia’s historical relationship with the UN, recalling its previous non-permanent seat and the critical support received during the civil war. It requested Gbowee to deliver a brief video message endorsing the bid and to participate in the launch event, reinforcing the country’s commitment to international peace and security.
Gbowee’s endorsement is expected to elevate Liberia’s visibility and strengthen its position in the global community as the country seeks to reclaim its role on the world stage.
