The House of Representatives has ordered the Liberia National Fire Service, the Liberia National Police, and the Liberia Electricity Corporation to appear before Plenary next Tuesday to explain the circumstances surrounding the fatal fire that claimed five lives in the Duport Road corridor.
The decision followed a formal complaint from Montserrado County District #4 Representative Michael Thomas, who urged lawmakers to intervene after the November 14 inferno devastated the Shara Community. The fire killed the community chairlady, Mrs. Deiode Garnette, her children Judee and Isaac Garnette, and two grandchildren, Christopher Freeman and Ruth Fleming.
Despite an immediate response from the LNFS, LNP, and LEC—each launching its own inquiry into the cause of the blaze—none of the agencies has released findings to the public. According to Rep. Thomas, the silence has fueled widespread speculation and conflicting narratives.
“As the representative of the affected district, I have a responsibility to ensure transparency,” Thomas said. “The lack of an official report has heightened anxiety and confusion among residents.”
In his communication, Thomas called on the House to compel the three institutions to present their investigative outcomes before the full body to help put rumors to rest and provide closure for grieving families.
Acknowledging the seriousness of the tragedy, Plenary agreed unanimously, mandating the summoned institutions to appear next Tuesday and present their official accounts. Lawmakers say the briefing is crucial to fulfilling their oversight duty and ensuring that public safety concerns are properly addressed.
