Monrovia – Global football governing body FIFA has issued a strong warning to the Liberia Football Association (LFA), cautioning that ongoing legal action in local courts over its upcoming elections could lead to serious sanctions, including possible suspension.
In an official communication dated March 22, 2026, FIFA responded to concerns raised by the LFA regarding a legal petition filed by Cassell Kuoh, president of FC Fassell. The petition reportedly seeks a court injunction to halt the LFA elections scheduled for April 18, 2026.
No to Court вмешment in Football Matters
FIFA emphasized that while it respects national legal systems, football-related disputes must be handled strictly within its internal structures. According to the world body, taking such matters to ordinary courts—especially electoral disputes—violates FIFA statutes unless explicitly permitted.
“Any recourse to ordinary courts is strictly prohibited,” the letter stressed, adding that disputes must instead be resolved through arbitration mechanisms recognized within football governance.
Risk of Suspension Looms
The global body warned that failure to adhere to these rules could result in sanctions under its regulatory framework. This includes the potential suspension of the LFA—an action that would bar Liberia from international competitions and football development programs.
FIFA further noted that even indirect interference, including actions by third parties through the courts, may be interpreted as undue influence in the affairs of a member association.
LFA’s Autonomy Under Scrutiny
Reinforcing its stance, FIFA pointed out that the LFA operates as an independent body under Liberian law but remains bound by international football statutes. It stressed that issues such as candidate eligibility and electoral processes fall squarely within the association’s internal governance.
“The existence of eligibility criteria does not infringe on civil rights but governs access to specific functions within the football structure,” FIFA clarified.
Call for Calm and Compliance
FIFA has urged all stakeholders within Liberian football to respect the statutes governing the game and to resolve disputes through established football channels rather than civil courts.
The letter concludes with a request for the LFA to keep FIFA informed of further developments, signaling close monitoring of the situation as the election date approaches.
The development adds a new layer of tension to Liberia’s football landscape, with the looming threat of international isolation should the dispute escalate beyond FIFA’s regulatory framework.
