Public concern over alleged corruption and questionable use of state resources is intensifying, with Liberians now calling on the Assets Recovery Team to expand its ongoing investigations. Many citizens are urging a thorough probe into the wealth and domestic investments of former Finance Minister Amara Konneh, who served under the administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Growing civic discussions and widespread social media commentary have raised concerns about Mr. Konneh’s alleged acquisition of vast agricultural lands across the country, rumored to be worth nearly one billion U.S. dollars. These claims have sparked renewed debate over whether all of the former minister’s assets were lawfully obtained during and after his time in public office.
Mr. Konneh has consistently rejected suggestions of misconduct, insisting that his wealth is the product of legitimate business endeavors and personal professional income. Despite his denials, many Liberians — including civil society actors — are maintaining their call for a transparent, independent, and comprehensive inquiry.
Advocates say such a probe is essential not only to uphold accountability, but also to reinforce public trust and support the government’s broader efforts to identify and recover any misappropriated state assets.
