‎AfroMedia Slams Journalist Killings in Gaza, Urges UN to Act Immediately

Egypt, Caro – ‎The African Initiative for Journalism and Media, widely known as AfroMedia, has issued a searing condemnation of the targeted killings of journalists in Gaza, calling the acts “a full-fledged war crime” and urging the United Nations to take swift and decisive action.

‎In a statement released this week, AfroMedia accused the Israeli military of deliberately targeting media professionals to “silence the truth” and “conceal crimes against civilians.” Citing reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the organization revealed that more than 240 journalists and media professionals have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, with dozens more injured or detained — making the Strip the deadliest place in the world for journalists in the 21st century.

‎“From Anas Al-Sharif to Yahya Sobeih, these killings are not random,” AfroMedia said. “They are part of a systematic campaign to erase independent reporting and monopolize the narrative.”

‎The group called on the UN and the International Criminal Court to launch urgent investigations, issue formal condemnations, and ensure that independent international media teams are granted immediate access to Gaza. AfroMedia also demanded the creation of preventive protection mechanisms for journalists, including the provision of protective gear and logistical support for those working in conflict zones.

‎AfroMedia stressed that these deaths are not just individual tragedies but a collective assault on press freedom, transparency, and the global public’s right to know. “Defending journalists means defending truth and justice,” the statement read. “Safeguarding their lives guarantees that future generations will know what happened without distortion or concealment.”

‎About AfroMedia
‎Founded as a bridge between Egypt and the rest of Africa, AfroMedia has a mission of reshaping negative narratives about the continent and strengthening African-Arab media ties. The initiative has played a key role in high-profile forums  including the Arab African Youth Forum and the Seventh International Forum for African Journalists, aimed at uniting African media voices and raising awareness about the continent’s development challenges. AfroMedia’s close engagement with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and other African leaders underscores its influence in shaping cross-continental media cooperation.

‎As the Gaza conflict continues, AfroMedia says the battle is not just on the ground but also in the fight for the truth and the world cannot afford to lose it.
