New York — Liberia, speaking on behalf of the African Group (A3) at the United Nations Security Council, on Monday voiced deep concern over unfolding developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, warning that recent events pose serious risks to both national stability and regional peace.

Delivering the statement at the Council’s sitting, Liberia’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Lewis Brown, represented the A3 bloc comprising the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and Liberia. He thanked the Council Presidency for convening what he described as a timely and critical meeting, while congratulating Somalia on assuming the Security Council presidency for the month.

The A3 aligned itself with the African Union’s recent communiqué on Venezuela, noting with particular concern reports surrounding the detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, as well as incidents involving Venezuelan state institutions. According to the group, such developments underscore the urgency of safeguarding constitutional order and preventing further destabilization that could threaten wider regional security.

Ambassador Brown emphasized that the A3 remains firmly committed to the principles of international law, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity as enshrined in the UN Charter. He stressed that these principles are essential for regional stability, peaceful coexistence, and international cooperation, while reiterating the importance of dialogue and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Addressing the path forward, the A3 maintained that Venezuela’s complex situation requires an inclusive and nationally owned solution. The group argued that lasting peace can only be achieved through constructive dialogue among Venezuelans themselves, with genuine respect for the rights and aspirations of the population, supported by the international community.

The statement concluded with a call for restraint and responsibility by all parties, both within Venezuela and beyond, urging avoidance of actions that could escalate tensions. The A3 reaffirmed its readiness to work with the Security Council and regional partners to support a peaceful, inclusive, and durable resolution, while expressing solidarity with the people of Venezuela and the African Union’s commitment to peace and mutual respect among nations.
