Monrovia, Liberia – Stanton Witherspoon, CEO of The Spoon Network and host of the widely popular Liberian talk show SPOON Talk, has publicly apologized for his involvement in the wire fraud scheme known as Operation Nightingale.
The scandal, which shocked the nursing and healthcare sectors, involved the illegal sale of fraudulent nursing diplomas from accredited Florida-based schools. Over 7,600 fake diplomas were reportedly issued by three South Florida institutions—Siena College, Palm Beach School of Nursing, and Sacred Heart International Institute. The scheme provided aspiring nurses with fraudulent credentials, bypassing proper licensing processes.
Witherspoon was one of 20 defendants who pleaded guilty to their roles in the operation. Appearing on The Plus, a program aired on Spoon FM, Witherspoon expressed deep remorse for his involvement, which he described as unintentional and without malice.
“I unknowingly and unintentionally became involved in a syndicate that defrauded others. I deeply regret the actions that took place and the harm caused to those affected,” Witherspoon said during the broadcast.
As part of his legal resolution, Witherspoon reimbursed $3.5 million in restitution and an additional $8 million to students impacted by the fraud. His actions during the case, including cooperation with the investigation, were reportedly instrumental in mitigating some of the fallout.
During his statement, Witherspoon extended his gratitude to Liberians both at home and abroad for their support during what he described as a challenging period. He also expressed his appreciation for stakeholders and ordinary citizens who stood by him amid the controversy.
“I want to thank everyone who supported me through this troubling time. To those affected by my actions, I extend my sincerest apologies and pledge to learn from this experience,” he said.
Witherspoon’s remarks mark the first time he has addressed the scandal publicly since the case unfolded, aiming to reconcile with the Liberian public and restore trust in his leadership.
Operation Nightingale has raised broader concerns about fraud in professional certification processes, prompting U.S. authorities to tighten oversight of nursing schools and licensing boards. Witherspoon’s involvement and subsequent apology serve as a cautionary tale about the far-reaching consequences of such fraudulent activities.
