President Boakai Meets ArcelorMittal’s Executive Chairman Lakshmi Mittal, Reiterates Government’s Commitment to Strengthening the MDA

Executive Mansion, Monrovia: The President of Liberia, H.E. Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., on Monday, April 8, 2024, held a high-level meeting with Mr. Lakshmi Mittal, the Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, the world’s second-largest steelmaker. The rendezvous took place at the Executive Mansion.

They discussed ArcelorMittal’s operations in Liberia and President Boakai’s Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism (ARREST) Agenda for Liberia’s sustainable development.

Despite the pending amendment of the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA), President Boakai reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to resolving matters so as to encourage further investments.

He welcomed ArcelorMittal’s commitment to Liberia and the people and emphasized the importance of continued partnership with ArcelorMittal as a trusted ally.

The Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, Mr. Lakshmi Mittal expressed satisfaction with President Boakai’s assurances and reiterated the company’s dedication to Liberia’s growth. He emphasized the need for executive, legislative, and community support for continued investment and development, indicating potential production beyond 15 million tons.

ArcelorMittal’s current $1.4 billion investment aims at expanding iron ore production to 15 million tons.

The Company, which remains one of Liberia’s largest investors, pledged to create more economic opportunities, support local development, and contribute to regional connectivity through infrastructure projects like the Ganta-Yekepa Highway.

Additionally, Mr. Mittal reaffirmed his Company’s commitment to vocational training and socio-economic development initiatives, including combating illicit drug use and contributing to critical infrastructure projects.

Overall, the meeting was productive as this reinforced the strong relationship between Liberia and ArcelorMittal.

The Government’s commitment, alongside ArcelorMittal’s dedication to Liberia’s growth and development, ensures a positive outlook for the country’s economic growth and sustainable development.
