Availability to Serve vs. Competency; the Story of a Recalcitrant UP Chairman Nelson Torbor of Grand Kru

According to a prominent source of Grand Kru County, who decided not to be named; within the center-circle of the county politics, narrated how the Grand Kru UP chairman has caused harm to himself but now blaming it on the county caucus and particularly the speaker of the 55th national legislature, the source said.

Nelson Torbor, from 2014-15 served Grand Kru youth as president and later flew to Monrovia for school purpose. During the time as president for the Grand Kru youth, there had been no cordial relationship between the youth and the county authority for his constant disrespect and insults on personalities of the county authority. Today, previous leaderships of the county hold it against him for his insult and constant disrespect. He’s claiming entitlement and again muscling everyone to the position he insulted others for, no one seems to trust him, and it seems everyone is raising arm against him.

“The Grand Kru Unity Party chairman, Nelson Tecgeoh Torbor has been a son and supporter of the speaker of the house of representatives since the Grand Kru lawmaker steps into politics; taking care of his tuition at the United Methodist University up to his graduation; his rent and personal upkeep, as well as for his monitoring & evaluation certificate program at the Liberia Institute for Public Administration amongst others”.

What went wrong?

“When nelson became chairman of the county chapter of the ruling party, he cursed the hands that has been feeding him”.

During the heat of the legislative and presidential elections of 2023, Nelson Torbor accused the then deputy speaker of ballot stuffing, an allegation the source maintained; the lawmaker who was seeking re-election did not take likely. Till date, the unfamiliar UP county chair has been blaming the county caucus of denying him the opportunity to become the county superintendent, the source added.

Assured of his preserved identity, the source said the UP county chair did not vote in favor of his party’s candidate in the district because he wanted to help in retaining the deputy speaker and ensure that the CDC candidates in the county were re-elected; as he could not make any difference in the ousted president’s home; that come what may, the unity party would not have won Grand Kru anyway, the source asserted.

Nelson Torbor has been crying wolf since the nomination of Madam Antoinette Worwlee Nimely and Joe M. Sekpeh as superintendent and assistant superintendent for development respectively. The ruling party county chairman strongly thinks that he is the only ideal candidate for the county highest post and undoubtedly believed the county caucus has double crossed submitting his name to the president who he thinks was misled.

The UP-county chair has been running to the executive mansion to plead with the president but has been asked to stay away and respect the president’s decision and has since being denied access to the mansion and seeing the party chairman on the matter.

From a destitute state of self-annoyance and distress, it is said that Nelson Torbor is on a hospital visitation schedule as he has developed pressure and severe headache that is detrimental to his wellbeing.

Evidence from a WhatsApp screenshot conversation from one of the Grand Kru district two lawmaker chatrooms, he was seen demanding a public apology from Nelson Torbor. According to the screenshot

Conversation to his foot soldiers, the speaker said he was questioned by the America embassy on the allegations of ballot stuffing, thereby tempering with the elections; something that could have ruined his reputation, he said.

“For the record no one but Victor Kaydor asked me for support for superintendent position. All others acted like I was irrelevant”, the screenshot read.

Nelson is seen accusing three members of the county caucus from a WhatsApp screenshot conversation relative to instructing the National Security Agency (NSA), to confiscate cellphones of the UP-county chapter during the elections.

Given the above, our source said Nelson has been operating spew of wrongful lies and has been acting disrespectful to every member of the county caucus.

Another section of the screenshot read, “relationship and respect are a two-way street. You don’t come to Cllr. Koffa when you in need but when it comes to politics you denounce him to the world”.

Cursing the hand that feeds you when you are not strong enough, can be devastating in the absence [of a sustainable alternative.

Having exhausted all the God given means available to him, Nelson has shifted the fight indirectly to the Grand Kru UP Youth chairperson, a high school boy, J. Nicholar Wuo, to combat President Joseph N. Boakai nominated leadership for the county, from a corruption allegation initiation perspective.

The Grand Kru UP chairman, through his county youth chair, has misdirected a list of self-generated counts of misappropriation against the county leadership that is yet to take seat, and has gathered a few street boys days ago to inform the UP national leadership that the people of grand Kru are rejecting the president nominated leadership; a deceptive move many have warned little Nicholas Wuo about. Considering that the superintendent nominated is not only developmental oriented, but also has no political affiliations and would implement the president mandate to the fullest.

“Barclayville served the superintendent post through Rosline Segbe Tonneh, Trenhbo served the superintendent post through Elizabeth Nyemalay Demster, Wedabo served the superintendent post through Doris Nyenapleh Ylatun and today Picniccess wants to serve the superintendent post through Antoinette Worwlee Nimely”, Philip Kieh Sikasika Sonpon.

Philip, who hails from Picnic-cess, the hometown of the nominated county superintendent, shared his opinion conversation with our reporter on the matter; expressing that the Gbetao Community (Pcnic-cess), is being ranked as one of original twelve traditional communities in Grand Kru thus, must be done the due diligence in all capacities that are societally befitting.
As the end of the president first 100 days in office is ending soon, county superintendents are yet to be confirmed; the minister of Internal Affairs is said to be working with the Liberian senate to set up a committee to fast-track confirmation of all superintendents.
