“More Money, More Problems?” House to Grill CBL, Finance Ministry on Printing Fresh Banknotes

Monrovia — With inflation still squeezing Liberian households, the House of Representatives is summoning the country’s top money men to defend a controversial push to print more cash. The Joint Committees on Banking and Currency and Judiciary will hold a public hearing Tuesday, July 8, 2026, on proposals for additional banknotes.

The hearing, set for 10:00 AM in the First Floor Conference Room at the Capitol Building, will put Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan and Central Bank Governor Henry F. Saamoi on the hot seat. They will be joined by former CBL Governor Elie E. Saleeby and former LBDI President John B. S. Davis, who are expected to give technical and historical perspective on money supply decisions.

The timing is raising eyebrows. Critics argue that injecting more Liberian dollars into the economy could further weaken the currency and drive up prices, while proponents say liquidity is needed to ease cash shortages in banks and markets. The Legislature says it wants “perspectives and technical input” before any decision is made.

The public and media have been invited to attend and participate, with the House of Representatives’ Director of Press & Public Affairs, Robert Haynes, signing the notice. The Ministry of Finance, Central Bank of Liberia, and Liberia Revenue Authority are listed among the institutions expected to be engaged.
