MONROVIA, Liberia – Liberia’s roads have turned deadly in the first quarter of 2026, with the Liberia National Police reporting nearly 400 traffic crashes that killed about 71 people in just three months.

Speaking at LNP Headquarters in Monrovia, Police Spokesperson Sam K. Collins said the spike in fatal accidents is now a “major public safety concern.” He blamed the trend largely on poor driving skills and a widespread disregard for traffic laws.

“Many of these crashes are tied to a lack of proper driving knowledge and poor adherence to traffic regulations,” Collins told reporters. The January to March 2026 data, he said, confirms the urgency of intervention.

In response, the LNP has launched a nationwide driver training program designed to equip motorists with basic road safety knowledge and practical skills. Officials say the initiative targets accident prevention and life-saving driving behavior on Liberia’s highways.

Collins urged all drivers to take responsibility behind the wheel. “We are calling on motorists to drive responsibly and obey traffic laws,” he stated. The LNP added that it will continue working with government agencies, transport unions, and road safety partners to cut preventable crashes and deaths.
