AFCON 2025 Row Deepens as George Manneh Weah Slams CAF Decision

Monrovia, – The controversy surrounding the ongoing African football crisis has intensified after Liberian football icon George Manneh Weah strongly criticized the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to withdraw the AFCON 2025 championship from Senegal and award it to Morocco.

In a sharply worded statement released Wednesday, Weah described CAF’s ruling as a dangerous precedent that undermines the integrity of football across the continent, adding his voice to growing criticism over what many observers are calling one of the most controversial decisions in recent African football history.

“Football Must Be Decided on the Pitch”

Referencing the globally recognized FIFA Laws of the Game, Weah emphasized that the referee remains the final authority during any match. He argued that once a game is completed under the referee’s supervision, its result should stand without interference.

The dispute stems from the dramatic AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco, where Senegal reportedly staged a walk-off during the match. Despite the disruption, the referee allowed play to continue, and the match was completed, including extra time, with a result recorded on the field.

Weah noted that the referee’s post-match report classified the incident as a stoppage—not a forfeiture—and recommended sanctions rather than overturning the result.

CAF Accused of Overreach

Despite these findings, a CAF committee later ruled to strip Senegal of the title and award it to Morocco—a move Weah insists contradicts the authority granted to match officials under the laws governing football.

“Football must be decided on the pitch, not re-decided after the final whistle,” Weah declared, warning that such actions could open the door for committees to routinely overturn referees’ decisions on penalties, offsides, and red cards.

Calls for Intervention

Weah further called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to urgently review the matter, describing the situation as a “travesty” that risks damaging trust in African football governance.

Social Media Claims Dismissed

Amid the unfolding drama, Weah also dismissed viral social media claims suggesting he supports CAF’s decision, labeling them as “blatantly false” and urging the public to disregard such misinformation.

A Growing Crisis for African Football

The CAF ruling has triggered widespread debate among fans, analysts, and football stakeholders, raising serious concerns about fairness, transparency, and governance within African football.

As the situation escalates, all eyes are now on CAS and other relevant authorities to determine whether the controversial decision will stand—or further deepen what many are already calling a defining crisis in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.
