A 37-year-old mother of three, Carolann Barraclough, has been confirmed deceased following an incident at her home in Horbury, West Yorkshire, England.

Police say the incident occurred between February 19 and 21, 2026. Her husband, David Barraclough, was later taken into custody.

According to court details, for nearly two weeks family and friends were told Carolann was in hospital and recovering. During that time, messages were sent from her phone that made it appear she was still in contact with loved ones. Her children also received messages they believed were from their mother.

Investigators said the children were prevented from entering a room in the home, and that the phone was later reset.

On March 5, David Barraclough went to Normanton Police Station and reported what had happened. Officers then searched the property and located Carolann.

He initially told the court he had acted in self-defence, but prosecutors presented evidence of a history of controlling behaviour.

His trial was set to begin at Leeds Crown Court, but on October 6, 2026, he entered a guilty plea on the first day.

Three days later, he received a life sentence. He did not attend the sentencing in person.

In a statement, Carolann’s sister Sarah Rowley spoke about the deep impact on the family, saying Carolann’s children were her world.

The court said the deception had caused further pain to the family during the period they believed she was still alive.
