Monrovia, Liberia The National Elections Commission (NEC) has taken a significant step toward modernizing its operations, presenting a comprehensive progress update on the development of a new corporate website to its Board of Commissioners. The initiative, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), marks a key milestone in the Commission’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency, and public engagement.
The presentation followed an intensive ten-day capacity-building training for NEC staff, part of a wider reform process that began in December 2025. The effort includes technical assessments, consultations, and working sessions designed to strengthen the Commission’s digital infrastructure, internal systems, and communication channels with the public.
Backed by funding from the European Union, along with the governments of Sweden and Ireland, the website modernization project is being implemented under the Liberia Electoral Support Project. The initiative emphasizes institutional ownership, ensuring NEC develops the internal capacity to independently manage and sustain its digital platforms.
The new website is designed to provide citizens with timely, accurate, and accessible electoral information, including election results, official announcements, voter education materials, and institutional data. Officials say the platform will significantly improve how the public interacts with the Commission, especially during election cycles.
Acting NEC Chairperson Jonathan K. Weedor described digital transformation as a strategic necessity for the institution. He stressed that improving access to credible information is essential to building public trust and strengthening accountability within the electoral process. He also acknowledged the critical role of development partners in supporting the Commission’s modernization efforts and praised NEC staff for their dedication throughout the training process.
Representing UNDP, Aagon Tingba highlighted the initiative’s importance in promoting transparency and improving information dissemination. He noted that a key strength of the project lies in its focus on empowering NEC staff to independently operate and maintain the platform, ensuring long-term sustainability beyond external support.
From a technical perspective, UNDP ICT Systems and Website Development Specialist Evrard Kouadio reported that the project is nearing completion, with approximately 80 percent of development already finalized. According to Kouadio, NEC staff have gained practical skills in website installation, configuration, content management, and publication workflows, marking a major leap in institutional capacity.
A live demonstration conducted by NEC personnel showcased several enhancements, including a modern user interface, improved navigation, real-time news updates, advanced search features, and interactive tools such as FAQs and messaging systems. The platform also incorporates a comprehensive digital archive and allows for dynamic content management aligned with electoral timelines.
The website is expected to be launched in phases, providing a secure and fully NEC-managed digital platform that supports electoral transparency, voter awareness, and public confidence in the democratic process.
The Liberia Electoral Support Project, implemented by UNDP in partnership with organizations such as UN Women and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, continues to play a central role in strengthening governance systems in Liberia. Through initiatives like this, stakeholders aim to promote inclusive, transparent, and accountable electoral processes across the country.
