The Liberia National Police has ordered a broader investigation and administrative review into the death of Charles Kollie, who died weeks after being released from police custody in Bong County.
Inspector General Gregory O. W. Coleman announced the expanded inquiry on May 20, following his visit to Bong County where he met with Kollie’s family, local authorities, and reviewed initial findings. The move comes amid public concern over the circumstances of Kollie’s arrest, detention, release, and subsequent death.
According to police records, Kollie was arrested on April 30, 2026, on allegations of criminal conspiracy and theft of property. He was released on May 4 pending further investigation. The LNP did not disclose the date or cause of his death in its release, but said the incident has raised “legitimate public concern” about the procedures followed during his detention and release.
The Inspector General has directed the Professional Standards Division to widen its inquiry. The review will examine whether detention and release protocols were followed, how the decision to release Kollie was made, the conduct of officers involved, and any institutional gaps that need correction. The PSD will coordinate with relevant authorities to keep the process “objective, evidence-based, and comprehensive,” the LNP stated.
Medical, forensic, and other evidentiary assessments will be used to determine the cause and manner of death, police said. The LNP added that if procedural violations, misconduct, or lapses in professional responsibility are found, “appropriate administrative and legal actions will be taken in accordance with the laws of Liberia and applicable police regulations.”
Coleman extended condolences to Kollie’s family and reaffirmed the LNP’s commitment to fairness, professionalism, due process, and respect for rights and dignity. The police urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while the investigation proceeds independently.
The LNP said updates will be provided as additional credible information becomes available.
