Justice Ministry Denies Illegal Mining Allegations, Calls Claims “Baseless and Misleading”

By Staff Writer

Monrovia — The Ministry of Justice has strongly dismissed allegations linking Justice Minister Cllr. Oswald N. Tweh and his Chief of Staff to illegal mining activities, describing the claims as “false, misleading, and entirely unfounded.”

In a press statement issued Monday, October 13, 2025, and signed by Jutonu Y. Kollie, Director of Press and Public Affairs, the Ministry refuted reports circulated by a caller on the “OK Afternoon Conversation” radio program, who alleged that the Minister’s Chief of Staff had been seen at a mining site.

The Ministry categorically denied the accusation, stating that neither Minister Tweh nor any member of his office is involved—directly or indirectly—in any form of mining, legal or illegal.

“These claims are entirely baseless and intended to tarnish the reputation of the Minister and the integrity of the Ministry of Justice,” the statement said. “We challenge those making such allegations to produce credible evidence to substantiate their claims instead of engaging in reckless speculation and misinformation.”

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law and ensuring that all acts of illegal mining and natural resource exploitation are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in line with Liberia’s legal framework.

It emphasized that the Ministry of Justice remains focused on its constitutional duties — upholding the rule of law, ensuring accountability, and protecting the interests of the Liberian people.

“The Office of the Minister assures the public that it remains focused on its core mandate of administering justice, strengthening the rule of law, and protecting the interests of the Liberian people,” the statement concluded.

The Ministry’s sharp reaction follows growing public concerns about illegal mining activities across Liberia — an issue that continues to challenge law enforcement agencies amid increasing environmental and community impacts.
