In the aftermath of a violent confrontation on August 10, 2023, between members of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the major opposition Unity Party (UP) at the Airfield Junction in district nine, the Liberian Joint Security has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The clash, which took place as members, supporters, and well-wishers of both political entities vied for control over a campaign venue, escalated into chaos, raising concerns about the state of campaign-related violence in the run-up to the 2023 elections.
Moses Carter, the spokesperson for the police, revealed in an exclusive interview with People News that the Joint Security is fully committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. “The events that unfolded yesterday are deeply troubling, and therefore we have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. We urge all concerned citizens, particularly those who witnessed the altercation, to come forward with any pertinent information that could aid our efforts to identify responsible parties and bring them to justice,” Carter stated.
He went on to emphasize the importance of political parties and independent candidates adhering to campaign schedules and respecting the boundaries of rival parties to prevent potential conflicts. “Our primary goal is to prevent the convergence of opposing political supporters at the same location, as this can often serve as a catalyst for disturbances,” Carter asserted.
Highlighting the consequences of the recent violence, Carter noted that the altercation resulted in three police officers sustaining severe injuries, setting an unfortunate tone for the unfolding 2023 election season. Despite the challenges posed by such incidents, Carter reassured the public that the Liberian National Police (LNP) is fully equipped to swiftly respond to any developments that may arise during the ongoing electoral process.
The Liberian public, as well as international observers, are closely watching the Joint Security’s investigation, which carries significant implications for the overall stability and fairness of the upcoming elections. The incident underscores the importance of maintaining a peaceful campaign environment, fostering healthy political competition, and ensuring that the democratic process is free from violence and intimidation.
