Abuja, Nigeria –The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially confirmed the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, marking a significant shift in West African politics.

In a press statement released today, ECOWAS acknowledged the departure of the three Sahel nations but emphasized that, in the spirit of regional solidarity and to prevent disruptions, it will continue to extend certain privileges to their citizens. The statement assured that passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of the three countries would still be recognized until further notice. Additionally, trade and investment activities between ECOWAS member states and the three nations will continue under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme and investment policy.

The regional body also confirmed that citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger would still be allowed visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS territories as per existing protocols. Furthermore, ECOWAS officials from the three countries will continue to receive full cooperation and support in their assignments within the bloc.

These measures, according to ECOWAS, will remain in effect until a final decision is reached regarding future engagement with the three countries. The Commission has set up a structure to facilitate discussions on the modalities of this transition, aiming to prevent confusion and minimize disruption to businesses and the lives of the people affected.

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger had announced their intention to leave ECOWAS in early 2024, citing dissatisfaction with the bloc’s handling of regional security and governance issues. Their departure marks a historic moment in West African geopolitics, with potential implications for regional stability and economic integration.
