Monrovia, Liberia – A brazen daylight robbery attempt at EcoBank’s 11th Street Headquarters in Sinkor was swiftly thwarted by security forces this Wednesday morning, with the suspect identified as Emery Johnson of the Du-port Road community in Paynesville.
According to eyewitness accounts and security sources, the incident unfolded around 10:45 a.m. in the Private Banking Section of the bank. Johnson, posing as a legitimate customer, gained access to the restricted area while carrying a concealed backpack. The bag was later found to contain weapons, including pepper spray, used in the surprise assault.
Private security guard Varney Karn, who was on duty during the attack, told reporters that the suspect used the pepper spray to blindside a female teller inside the building. However, the quick-thinking employee managed to activate the alarm belt, alerting nearby staff and drawing the immediate response of the Liberian National Police, who arrested the suspect on the scene.
“There was no property damaged and no cash was stolen,” Officer Karn confirmed. “Only a minor injury was sustained by the teller who was sprayed in the eyes.”
The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue into his motive and whether he acted alone.
EcoBank has yet to release an official statement, but sources say banking operations were temporarily disrupted during the security response.
Meanwhile, the LNP through its Facebook page has confirmed the arrest of suspect Emery Johnson and is set to undergo investigation.
