The Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed a cross-border security incident involving personnel from the Guinea, after Guinean Armed Forces reportedly entered the border town of Kaleyereh in Sulima Chiefdom, Falaba District on Monday, 23 February 2026.

According to the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces and the Sierra Leone Police were in the area at the time, engaged in producing construction materials for a border post and accommodation facility intended to strengthen security operations. Officials noted that the Sierra Leone national flag had already been raised within territory recognized as belonging to Sierra Leone.

During the encounter, Guinean troops allegedly apprehended several members of the joint security team, including an officer, and transported them into Guinean territory. Their weapons and ammunition were also reportedly confiscated. Authorities say diplomatic and security channels are actively being used to verify the whereabouts of the detained personnel and to secure their safe and unconditional release.

Government further disclosed that the matter has been communicated to national, regional, and sub-regional authorities, with ongoing engagement aimed at ensuring a peaceful and amicable resolution. A fact-finding mission has also been constituted to visit the area and establish a clearer timeline of events.

Officials say the government remains fully engaged and will continue updating the public as verified information becomes available.
