Maryland County, Liberia – Traditional Chiefs and Elders in Pleebo Sodoken District have decided to halt all development projects linked to Senator James Biney, citing a leadership dispute.
During a meeting on February 26 in Wetchoken Town, the chiefs accused Senator Biney of deliberately blocking the confirmation of Prince Tarwhen as Statutory District Superintendent. Tarwhen was nominated by President Joseph Boakai, but he has yet to be confirmed or assume office.
According to the chiefs, this delay is affecting development in the district, which they describe as an important political and economic hub in Maryland County. They insist that Tarwhen was recommended by local leaders and deserves to occupy the position.
In a strong statement, the chiefs alleged that Senator Biney is withholding an official appointment letter from the government that would confirm Tarwhen’s role.
Senator Biney has refused to release the appointment letter for Mr. Tarwhen, so we are rejecting all his development projects in the district, they declared.
As part of their decision, the chiefs have started visiting project sites associated with the senator, instructing contractors and beneficiaries to stop work immediately.

We have ordered the closure of two project sites linked to Senator Biney. No work should continue until he releases the appointment letter, they stated.
Additionally, the traditional leaders have vowed not to engage in any discussions or business dealings with the senator until the issue is resolved.
