Breaking: Leaked Letter Reveals Suspension of NEC Chairperson

A letter posted and quickly deleted from the National Elections Commission (NEC) official Facebook page has caused a stir, confirming the indefinite suspension of its Chairperson, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai cited actions deemed disruptive to public order and stability as the reason behind the suspension.

The letter, dated January 15, 2025, detailed allegations that Browne-Lansanah made unilateral administrative decisions, including closing the NEC office for one month and dismissing 25 employees without consultation or approval from the NEC Board of Commissioners.

President Boakai referenced sections 2.1 and 2.10(d) of the 1986 New Elections Law, emphasizing that such authority rests with the collective NEC Board, not with any single individual. The letter further criticized the Chairperson’s actions for potentially jeopardizing the integrity and stability of the institution.

While the government committed to investigating grievances raised by aggrieved NEC workers, it highlighted concerns over the Chairperson’s unilateral decisions. President Boakai assured the public of efforts to stabilize the NEC and ensure smooth electoral processes within the next two months.

The government reiterated its dedication to transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law in all institutions.

This development has sparked public debate, with many questioning the motives behind the quick deletion of the letter from NEC’s official page. The situation underscores rising tensions within the NEC as Liberia navigates its electoral timeline.
