The Lofa County Bar Association (LCBA) has strongly condemned a series of violent incidents in Lofa County that have left the region in turmoil. The unrest began with the tragic death of Ms. Moyoungor Keleko, a woman in her late 40s, reportedly murdered under suspicious circumstances. The aftermath of her death saw unidentified individuals setting homes ablaze in Duogomai Town.
The situation worsened when Yarkpolo Moisema, a 17-year-old being held as a person of interest in the case, allegedly committed suicide while in police custody. This shocking development provoked public outrage, culminating in mobs burning the Magisterial Court and Police Station in John Town.
The LCBA through its leadership has expressed deep concerns over these events, calling for a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation into Ms. Keleko’s murder, the arson attacks, and the circumstances surrounding the alleged suicide. They emphasized the need for those responsible for these acts of lawlessness to face justice.
The association has also condemned the violent retaliation by mobs, stating that acts of vandalism and self-help undermine the rule of law and only escalate tensions. Instead, they urged the public to remain calm and allow the justice system to operate.
In light of these developments, the LCBA has announced the expansion of its Legal Education Program across Lofa County. This initiative aims to educate citizens on the importance of legal processes and discourage acts of vigilantism.
Commending the efforts of the Liberia National Police, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and other stakeholders in restoring order, the LCBA reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law while ensuring the safety of all residents in Lofa County.
