In a strong reaffirmation of his commitment to the rule of law, Hon. Luther Sandy Collins, the Representative for Gbarpolu County District #2, has voiced unwavering support for embattled House Speaker Cllr. Janathan Fonati Koffa amid ongoing tensions in the Liberian Legislature. Speaking exclusively to The People’s Newspaper in his Capitol building office in Monrovia, Collins emphasized that his decision to stand by Speaker Koffa is rooted in a solemn vow to uphold and protect the Constitution of Liberia.
“I made an oath to support, protect, and defend the Constitution and laws of this Republic. I cannot and will not be coerced or induced into compromising my principles,” Rep. Collins stated. “My conscience leads me to stand firm with Speaker Koffa, and that will not change under any circumstances.”
Collins also used the opportunity to call on his colleagues to reconsider their actions aimed at removing the legitimately elected Speaker without due process. He urged them to return to the legislative chamber and prioritize the work of the people over political theatrics.
“Let us stop the bluffing and get back to the work we were elected to do—not only for ourselves but for the citizens who put their trust in us,” he said. “The constant distractions tarnish the reputation of the Legislature and undermine the very foundation of our democracy. It’s time to do things differently, for the sake of the people and the country.”
Rep. Collins expressed frustration over what he described as a criminalization of his stance against wrongdoing, highlighting the consequences lawmakers face when they stand by their principles. He called on his fellow legislators to reflect on the gravity of their actions and their responsibility to the public.
“We must rise above petty politics and personal interests. Our duty is to the people who elected us to serve with integrity and to uphold the rule of law,” he concluded.
As the speakership saga continues to unfold, Rep. Collins’ resolute stand reflects a broader debate on governance, accountability, and the future direction of Liberia’s legislative body.
