Supreme Court Urges Due Process in Speaker Koffa’s Removal Dispute

By: The People News Online

A court conference was recently concluded with Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as tensions rise in the ongoing dispute over House Speaker Fonati Koffa’s potential removal. The conference saw representation from both sides: the Speaker’s bloc was led by former Associate Justice Kabineh Ja’neh and Cllr. Cyrenius Cephas, while the Majority bloc was represented by former Senator Varney Sherman.

During the proceedings, the Speaker’s legal team highlighted significant procedural flaws in the Majority lawmakers’ efforts to oust Koffa, arguing that the removal attempt lacked the due process mandated by law. Justice Gbeisay probed Cllr. Sherman on whether any formal complaints had been filed with the Speaker before the initiative to remove him began. Cllr. Sherman responded in the affirmative, asserting that the Speaker’s rights had not been infringed.

In contrast, Koffa’s legal representatives countered Sherman’s claim, stating that no formal complaint had actually been submitted. They argued that the Majority bloc had merely gathered signatures without following appropriate protocols to initiate a removal process.

Emphasizing the critical nature of due process, Justice Gbeisay urged the Majority bloc to adhere to proper legal procedures moving forward. Cllr. Sherman agreed to follow this directive, acknowledging the importance of compliance in such matters.

Representative Samuel Kogar, the leader of the Majority bloc, was present at the conference and announced that a session would be scheduled for the following day. However, he expressed uncertainty regarding whether this session would take place in the main chamber or the joint chambers.

As events unfold at Capitol Hill, all eyes remain on the proceedings, with the next session poised to address the complexities surrounding Koffa’s leadership amid growing tensions within the legislature.
