Brussels, Belgium – In a significant boost to Liberia’s development efforts, the European Union has announced a €108 million support package aimed at addressing critical areas such as direct budgetary assistance, gender-based violence, and public-private partnerships. The announcement was made during a one-day working session attended by Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Sara Beysolow-Nyanti, and several high-ranking EU officials.

Minister Beysolow-Nyanti’s visit to Brussels included meetings with key figures such as Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen, EU Permanent Representative for Human Rights Olof Skoog, and other senior officials, including 27 EU ambassadors. The discussions focused on enhancing Liberia-EU relations through the “ARREST AGENDA,” a strategic framework designed to accelerate national development, as well as Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Commissioner Urpilainen expressed gratitude to Liberia for its ongoing support in critical areas such as human rights, rule of law, and regional stability amid the Ukraine-Russia crisis. She emphasized the EU’s appreciation for Liberia’s leadership in promoting peace and security within the Mano River Union.

In her address, Minister Nyanti conveyed the gratitude of the Liberian government and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. for the EU’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. She highlighted the long-standing partnership that dates back to the 1970s, marked by the signing of the ACP-EU agreement.

The Foreign Minister also underscored the importance of mutual collaboration, focusing on shared values like climate diplomacy and regional security. She called on EU member states to support Liberia’s efforts in strengthening the Mano River Union for collective security.

Currently, the EU supports Liberia’s development initiatives through frameworks like the Global Gateway and the Multiannual Indicative Program, which prioritize infrastructure, education, and governance reforms.

As Liberia embarks on a new chapter of cooperation with the EU, the €108 million support package is expected to play a crucial role in advancing the country’s socio-economic development and reinforcing its position on the global stage.
