Monrovia, Liberia – In an effort to support its citizens, the governments of Liberia and Japan have formalized an exchange of notes and a $3 million donation of assorted rice.
The signing ceremony, held in Monrovia over the weekend, is part of Japan’s Kennedy Rice (KR) Food Aid program, which aims to enhance food security in Liberia.
At the ceremony, Foreign Affairs Minister Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti underscored the significance of the donation as a deepening of the partnership between the two nations. She explained that the rice will be sold by the Liberian government to fund socio-economic initiatives not covered by the national budget.
Japanese Ambassador to Liberia, His Excellency Mochizuki Hisanobu, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to the Kennedy Rice (KR) program, emphasizing the crucial role of rice in the diets of many Liberians. He noted that the donation reflects a long-standing tradition of Japanese support for Liberia, aimed at improving food security and livelihoods across the country.
