28 Members of the Liberian Senate Sign Proposal, Seeking the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia

CAPITOL HILL–A proposal calling for the establishment of an Extraordinary War and Economic Crime Court for Liberia was signed by 28 senators, including two warlords from the past.

The Senate adopted the resolution, which was modeled after the House of Representatives, on Tuesday during their normal session.
It would be returned to the House for approval of the modifications made. It is evident from the Senate’s most recent action that the 55th National Legislature has decided to establish the court.

Nonetheless, in the event that a Joint Resolution is ultimately approved by both Houses, the Executive branch, led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, may take action by proposing an Act.

The National Legislature may be asked to revisit the proposed Act in order to take further measures that would result in the court’s establishment in accordance with the Liberian Constitution of 1986.
