EU Council of Patriots Endorses Joseph Boakai and Jeremiah Koung Ahead of Liberia’s Presidential Runoff

Monrovia Liberia- The Council of Patriots (COP) European Union Chapter has formally endorsed the presidential bids of former Vice President Joseph Boakai and Senator Jeremiah Koung from the Unity Party (UP) for the upcoming November 14, 2023 runoff elections in Liberia. In a statement, the COP EU Chapter highlighted several key factors behind their endorsement, including concerns about poor governance, injustices, rampant corruption, illicit drug importation, and a struggling healthcare system during the tenure of the incumbent President George Weah.

The COP EU Chapter expressed a shared belief that the candidacies of JNB and JKK represent a promising path toward a more prosperous, just, transparent, and accountable Liberia. They encouraged all Liberian citizens to join them in voting for change in the upcoming runoff election to collectively forge a brighter and more equitable future for their nation.

According to the statement, the COP EU Chapter voiced their reservations about what they perceived as poor governance during the current administration, leading to issues like economic instability, inadequate infrastructure development, and disregard for the rule of law. They firmly believed that a change in leadership was imperative to address these challenges and set Liberia on a more promising trajectory.

The Council of Patriots underscored the critical importance of justice as a fundamental right for all Liberians. They expressed concern that, despite its significance, access to justice has often been denied or delayed, leaving the population without adequate means to address issues such as corruption and human rights abuses.

They highlighted that Boakai and Koung prioritize ensuring justice for all Liberians, emphasizing their support for this approach. Corruption was also a major point of concern for the COP EU Chapter, noting its detrimental impact on economic growth, public trust, and societal inequality. The rampant circulation of illegal substances, particularly “Kush,” was also strongly criticized due to its implications for national security and public health.
