Liberia’s Minister of Information, Piah, confirmed Monday that George “Leroy” Harris, owner of the popular Monrovia nightlife spot, has been arrested and formally charged in connection with an alleged US$317 million drug operation.
Prosecutors say Harris faces a sweeping indictment: unlicensed importation and possession of illicit drugs, trafficking, distribution, economic sabotage, money laundering, and criminal conspiracy. Authorities allege he used the bar’s brand and cash flow to mask the movement of narcotics within Liberia and across its borders. The charges mark one of the most high-profile drug cases in Liberia’s recent history.
The arrest signals a shift in how Monrovia is tackling organized crime. For years, critics have accused authorities of targeting low-level dealers while big operators stayed untouched. By going after a public-facing business owner, the government is testing that narrative. “No one is above the law,” Minister Piah said, framing the case as proof of a tougher crackdown.
