KAKATA, Margibi County – The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency is sounding the alarm on a silent killer inside Liberia’s security sector: alcohol.

Speaking at the Liberia National Police Symposium 2026 at the LNP Training Academy, LDEA Officer-in-Charge Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitzgerald T. M. Biago directly linked the rising number of deaths among law enforcement officers to excessive alcohol consumption.

“Addressing alcohol consumption among officers would improve their health, boost productivity, and help extend their lifespan,” DCP Biago told the gathering of officers ahead of the June 12 graduation ceremony.

The LDEA boss described alcohol abuse as a major health challenge within the country’s security institutions and called for urgent intervention. He urged police commanders and other security agencies to strengthen wellness programs and push healthier lifestyles among personnel if they want a more effective, longer-living force.

The symposium is being held under the theme “Contemporary Policing for Sustainable Peace and Community Well-Being,” with the graduation set for June 12 at the Liberia National Police Training Academy and School.

Biago’s remarks come amid growing concern over lifestyle diseases and premature deaths among security personnel, with alcohol now being named as one of the leading contributors.
