Boakai Nominates Weedor as NEC Chairman

Monrovia, Liberia — Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated Jonathan K. Weedor as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), following the resignation of Davidetta Browne-Lansanah.

According to a statement issued by the Executive Mansion on March 30, 2026, Weedor brings extensive experience in electoral management, governance, and public service. He previously served as a Commissioner at the NEC from 2004 to 2020, where he oversaw key departments including Human Resources, Finance, and Procurement. During his tenure, he also acted as Co-Chairman, contributing to the administration and credibility of Liberia’s electoral processes.

Weedor has also participated in several international electoral missions across Africa, with engagements in countries such as Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria. His experience further includes election observation and assessment assignments under the African Union and ECOWAS.

Academically, Weedor holds a Master of Arts degree with Honors in Development Studies, specializing in Development Management, from the School for International Training in Vermont, United States. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in General Forestry from the University of Liberia.

Pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate, President Boakai has directed that Weedor serves as Acting Chairman of the NEC until the Senate reconvenes from its current recess.

The President expressed confidence in Weedor’s competence, integrity, and professionalism, noting that his leadership is expected to strengthen transparency, independence, and credibility in Liberia’s electoral process.
