‎Boakai Extends Mandatory Firearms Registration to Curb Illegal Weapons

‎Monrovia, – Joseph Nyuma Boakai has issued Executive Order No. 162, extending the mandatory registration of firearms held by civilians across Liberia, as part of efforts to address the growing threat posed by illegal weapons.

‎According to the Executive Mansion, the move is driven by rising concerns over the proliferation and unregulated possession of illicit firearms and ammunition, which authorities say continue to endanger national security, public safety, and economic stability. The government noted that the widespread circulation of illegal weapons has contributed to armed robberies and other violent crimes, undermining the country’s hard-earned peace.

‎The President emphasized that despite previous interventions, the illegal possession and use of small arms and light weapons remain a serious national challenge. These weapons, he said, continue to fuel conflicts, slow development, and contribute to crimes, including violence against women and children.

‎The order also reaffirms Liberia’s commitment to international and regional arms control frameworks, including the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty and the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons. These agreements require the government to take decisive legislative, administrative, and public awareness measures to combat the illegal manufacture, trafficking, and circulation of firearms.

‎While strengthening restrictions, the Executive Order recognizes provisions under the Firearms and Ammunition Control Act of 2015, which allow limited firearm possession under strict regulation for purposes such as hunting, recreation, traditional practices, and specific security needs, subject to approval by the relevant authorities.

‎To ensure full implementation, the Ministry of Justice, working alongside the Liberia National Commission on Arms and with support from other government institutions and partners, has been tasked with rolling out an operational plan. Local authorities across counties and districts have also been directed to support enforcement efforts nationwide.

‎President Boakai said the measure is intended to safeguard Liberia’s peace and security, urging all citizens in possession of firearms to comply with the registration requirements within the stipulated timeframe.

‎The Executive Order takes immediate effect.
