New York – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., President of Liberia, delivered his inaugural address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting the importance of unity and sustainable development in the face of global challenges.
In his speech, President Boakai commended newly-elected UNGA President Philemon Yangon and praised outgoing President Dennis Francis for his leadership. He reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address pressing issues like poverty, climate change, and public health.
Reflecting on Liberia’s democratic progress, Boakai noted the peaceful transition of power earlier this year, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s recovery from a history of conflict. He underscored the importance of the rule of law, transparency, and accountability in governance.
Addressing the challenges posed by drug abuse among youth, Boakai declared it a national security threat and called for international support to combat this crisis. He also highlighted Liberia’s commitment to maternal and child health, thanking the UN for its support in these areas.
The President expressed concerns over regional security threats in West Africa, advocating for dialogue among nations to ensure stability. He condemned ongoing global conflicts, including in the Middle East and Ukraine, calling for immediate ceasefires and peaceful resolutions.
In a significant announcement, Liberia declared its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2026, seeking to amplify its role in promoting global peace and justice.
Boakai concluded his address by reaffirming Liberia’s dedication to fostering a fair and dignified future for all, rooted in the principles of multilateralism and shared values. He urged the international community to join hands in creating a more peaceful and sustainable world.
