Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, celebrated being re-elected to a six-year term in an election where voters had few actual options because most possible opponents had been intimidated or imprisoned.
Putin ignored those who challenged the vote and told supporters that he thought the election was democratic.
“We have a ton of work ahead of us. However, Putin stated, “Nobody has ever succeeded in history, they are not succeeding now, and they will never succeed in the future when we are consolidated, no matter who wants to intimidate or suppress us.”
Putin’s 24-year rule was being extended through a three-day poll that started on Friday. The election was held in a strictly regulated atmosphere that forbade any public criticism of Putin or his conflict in Ukraine.
