Monrovia — President Joseph Boakai has signed the Cybercrime Act and the Data Protection Act into law, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Sekou Kromah, announced Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

Kromah made the disclosure during a ceremony marking the adoption of new Satellite Communications Guidelines by the Liberia Telecommunications Authority. He said the signing marks a major step in regulating Liberia’s digital space.

The new Cybercrime Act makes it a crime to carry out several online offenses. These include unauthorized access to computer systems, digital fraud, identity theft, online harassment, and the illegal interception or misuse of personal data.

For the first time, the law also protects whistleblowers. It shields people who report cybercrimes in good faith from retaliation or legal trouble. Government officials say this is meant to encourage people to speak up without fear.

With both laws now in effect, authorities say enforcement will begin immediately. The Data Protection Act is expected to set rules for how companies and government institutions collect, store, and use citizens’ personal information.
