Liberia To Take 1,200 Deportees From U.S. — First 20 Arrive Friday

Monrovia — Liberia has agreed to receive 1,200 people being transferred from the United States, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah confirmed.

The first group of 20 is expected to arrive in Liberia on Friday. Minister Piah said the move shows Liberia’s “hospitality and willingness to assist people in need,” calling Liberia “a country of free people.
These are not Liberians. They are “third-country nationals” — people from other countries who were in the U.S. and could not be sent back home. Under a new deal, the U.S. will propose them to Liberia, and Liberia can accept or reject.

The agreement was signed on September 10, 2025. It says Liberia must not send the people back to their home countries until their protection claims are decided. Liberia will also have to create a process for those who don’t apply for asylum.

The deal covers adults only. The U.S. said it “shall not transfer unaccompanied minors”.

There is also no promise of U.S. money. The agreement states that nothing in it “commits the disbursement or allocation of funds” and implementation depends on “availability of funds and technical capacity”.

Both countries can cancel the deal at any time with written notice.

Government has not said where the 1,200 people will live or how they will be supported.
