Durban, South Africa — Authorities have confirmed that 12 babies have been born at the Sherwood camp in Durban, where thousands of Malawian nationals are sheltering pending repatriation to Malawi.
The Department of Home Affairs said the most recent two births occurred on June 17, 2026. The camp has served as the main holding site since early June, when large numbers of Malawian nationals gathered there seeking assistance to return home.
Government agencies began processing migrants and transporting families to Malawi in early June. Officials report that more than 600 people have been repatriated to date, while thousands remain at the site awaiting processing and transport.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial authorities have described the situation at Sherwood as a humanitarian concern, citing the number of women and children at the camp. Government departments and aid organizations are providing support services on site while repatriation operations continue.
The Sherwood camp remains the focal point of South Africa’s current repatriation effort for Malawian nationals. Processing and departures are ongoing as authorities coordinate logistics for the remaining individuals at the site.
