“Public Service Should Reflect Public Interest, Not Personal Luxury” Chairman party chair..
In a recent statement, Unity Party Chairperson Luther Tarpeh has called on Commerce Minister Amin Modad to address growing public concerns regarding the purchase of expensive vehicles by the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA). This controversy has ignited significant backlash, prompting questions about the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Tarpeh firmly asserted that public officials must prioritize the interests of the people over personal indulgence. “If you desire to live a luxurious life, go and start your own company. The Liberian people’s job is not for your personal luxury,” he emphasized, highlighting the disconnect between public service and private gain.
While acknowledging Modad’s competence and previous contributions to the party, including rebranding efforts following the 2017 electoral defeat, Tarpeh insisted that issues of transparency cannot be overlooked. He stressed that public trust hinges on clear accountability from government officials.
“This address is not in any way to indict Minister Modad or to exonerate him,” Tarpeh stated, urging the Minister to provide clarity on allegations surrounding the MEDTECH deal. He called for substantial evidence to dispel any concerns about potential misconduct.
Tarpeh also reminded government officials of President Joseph Boakai’s commitment made during his 2024 inauguration: “There will be no business as usual.” This pledge reinforces the necessity for a new standard of integrity within public office.
The Unity Party reiterated its position that public officials must exemplify integrity and accountability. Tarpeh’s comments serve as a reminder of the expectations placed on those in power, emphasizing that they should lead by example.
As public scrutiny continues, the call for transparency in government dealings remains urgent. The Unity Party’s stance reflects a broader demand from citizens for accountability from their leaders.
In a climate where trust in government is crucial, the expectation for public officials to serve with integrity and prioritize the people’s needs has never been more vital.
