The Mano River union youth Parliament Liberia chapter, has condemned a recent incident of Police brutality orchestrated by Officer David S. Fayiah that led to the loss of the life of a 19-year-old youth identified to as Mohammed Manobah and has meanwhile called on the Liberia National Police to conduct a speedy and impartial investigation into the matter.
The MRU-YP Liberia Chapter, in a press statement issued Wednesday August, 7 2024 stated that based on gathered information at 9:00pm on August 3, 2024, in the Banjor Community, an off-duty Police officer identified David S. Fayiah, with an unlicensed firearm, shot to death a young Liberian student, Mohammed Monobah, age 19, following a verbal exchange.
The Mano River Union Youth Parliament release noted that in an era of modern policing, it’s regrettable for an officer whose responsibility is to ensure law enforcement and the protection of lives and property will engage in such an alleged act of murder arousing verbal altercations. The MRU-YP Wonders how a verbal exchange has become proportional to the use of firearms that has resulted in the loss of life.
The youth organization questioned the professionalism of the Liberia National Police following robust trainings of LNP officers since 2005 to the present.
The increase in reported incidents of police brutality not only undermine it’s integrity but sheds questions of “trust”, which is detrimental to the peaceful governance of the state.
MRU-YP is however commending Police IG Col Gregory Coleman for his Outstanding initial decision regarding the incident, coupled with his actions to visit the bereaved family as a sign of remorse and sympathy.
Meanwhile , Mano River Union Youth Parliament has extended its condolences to the family members of the late Mohammed Manobah and urged them to exercise restraint as the law takes its course.
